Details of the flag of France

Origins of the flag

The flag originated at the end of the 18th century. The French Revolution brought this beautiful emblem. Its design is often attributed to the Marquis de Lafayette, a national hero (in France and the United States).

Colours of the French flag

White is the official colour of the country. Although it embodies royalty, it has been the representative colour of France for many years. Blue refers to the equality of all citizens of the Republic and red represents the blood of all those who gave their lives for the country.
Some claim that another meaning of the flag is related to France's motto, liberty (white), fraternity (red) and equality (blue).
